Variations of Football Pool

Regardless of whether or not you enjoy watching the game of football, a football pool can add a great deal of interest for you.  Football pools are great for a super bowl party, among a group of friends, or in the office due to the simplicity they provide.  Indeed, all you need to get started is a good football pool template and a group of people to play with.

There are three primary types of football pools which are: football squares, team-based football pools, and situation football pools.  If you’re unaware of the differences between these pools, don’t worry, we’ll explain that below.

Squares Football Pool Template

Perhaps the simplest form of football pool is the squares football pool.  Squares football pools are quick to set up and easy to track – particularly if you have a good squares football pool template.  Essentially, a squares football pool is a 10 by 10 grid with one team on the y axis and one team on the x axis.  The columns and rows are labelled 0 through 9 and represent the last digit of the final score for each team (you can also use one sheet per quarter).

The pool is simply – each player writes their name or initials in a square.  Depending on the number of players, each person will have a varying number of chances to win.  For instance, if there are 10 players, each player will have 10 chances to win (100 squares divided by 10 players).  At the end of the game or quarter, write down who wins.  When the game is over, the player with the most points wins the pool.

Team-based Football Pool Template

This football pool is based on the entire season (or a portion of the season).  Each person playing will be required to pick the winner of each game (this will be included on the template).  As the season progresses keep track of wins and losses and award points to people who have chosen the winning team.

At the end of the season or duration of the pool, the player with the most points wins.  Consider keeping a running total of points for each player to add a little excitement and competition to the pool.  If you’re playing for money, consider awarding the first, second, and third placed player.

Situation Football Pool Template

This type of pool is the most complicated of the three covered in this article.  But given that there are more variables to track, it can be more exciting – especially for those who are into football.

Like the team-based football pool, this pool is tracked game by game.  However, whereas the team-based football pool only tracks the team that wins and loses, the situation football pool tracks various situations that can occur.  For instance, depending on what you wish to include, players can bet on who will win the coin toss, what team will score first, and who will win the game.  If you’re creative, there are an endless amount of variables you can track.
